FIFA Finally Retains Linus Mba as Technical Adviser

NBC:   Reports that  World football governing body, FIFA, has retained Nigeria’s Linus Mba as its Technical Adviser in Africa for Refereeing. Mba is one of the finest ‘Gentlemen of the Whistle’ to have come out of Nigeria. The former FIFA referee is also the NFF Consultant on Refereeing and one of only two Africans retained in that position.
The other is the former Tunisian FIFA referee, Neiji Jouini. Both men have been involved in FIFA development activities for close to two decades now.  Mba had been a member of the CAF Referees Committee for 10 years and had continued to serve as Referee Instructor for FIFA and CAF.
He had trained referees in virtually all English –speaking National Associations on the African continent. Mba also serves as Referee Assessor in top grade FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches and is involved in general referee instruction programmes for CAF.
Jouini has a long –term contract with the Qatar Football Association and works for CAF during a number of championships.
Both men are in the company of the likes of Pierluigi Collina (Italy), Barry Neale (England); Batta Marc (France), Vicar Donald (Scotland) and David Elleray (England) as FIFA Technical Advisers.
The world body works through three Referees Development Officers in Africa–Carlos Henriques (South Africa), El Shenawy (Egypt) and Megassa Sidi Bekaye (Mali).

3 Takeaways from Mexico's curse-breaking win against US Men

Mexico snapped its losing streak against the U.S. men's national team at Columbus on Friday when it scored off a corner kick in the 89th minute to win 2-1 in World Cup Qualifying action.
U.S. had defeated Mexico 2-0 four straight times in Columbus, leading to the series nickname "dos a cero," but that was quickly dispelled when Miguel Layun struck for Mexico in the 20th minute.
Bobby Wood equalized in the 49th minute on a great piece of interplay with Jozy Altidore, but Mexico added a second goal with just a minute and stoppage time left on the clock.

Busquets: Messi is going nowhere

(L-R) Barcelona's Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi celebrate a goal against Atletico Madrid

Busquets spoke out following reports which suggested the Argentinian had fallen out with manager Luis Enrique.
The 26-year-old has no doubts Messi will be staying with the Catalan club, telling his club's official website: "He controls his future and he has said he has no intention of leaving - and that's very important for us.
"All he was saying yesterday was the typical cliche that you never know what might happen in the future.
"People usually only know what they are told by the press but I think everyone has now had a chance to speak. We just want to be united, to be as one, and for the fans to be behind us."
Busquets spoke very highly of his team-mate, describing him as a very 'down-to-earth' person - and expects the La Liga record goalscorer to see out the remainder of his career at Barcelona.
The 27-year-old has already scored 16 goals this season but missed out on the FIFA Ballon d'Or for the second successive year to fierce rival Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday night.

MIKEL CELEBRATES HIS FIRST UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GOAL

London - Nigerian international, John Obi Mikel, got among the goals for English Barclays Premier League club, Chelsea, in what represents his first goal in the Uefa Champions League, SuperSport reports.
David Luiz and John Obi Mikel (AFP)The feat put smiles in the face of the Super Eagles player.
Since joining the London club, Mikel had only scored four goals in the league and Cup competitions in England but the midfielder netted in the 56th minute in Chelsea's 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Interestingly, Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, opted to start Mikel as well as Serbian midfielder, Nemanja Matic, who has been the reason the Nigerian has seen limited action with the Blues.
Cesc Fabregas and Andre Schurrle gave Chelsea a two-goal lead inside the opening 16 minutes before Paulo Oliveira halved the Blues' lead five minutes into the second half.
But Mikel made the game safe for Chelsea when he tapped in from inches to give the London club a 3-1 win after it appeared Sporting were braced up for a fightback.

Mourinho backs Costa to play key Chelsea role

Jose Mourinho believes Diego Costa has recovered from his long-standing injury problems and is now ready to play a full part in Chelsea's testing run of fixtures to the turn of the year.
Chelsea manager Mourinho has maintained the Spain striker has required careful handling after suffering injuries while away on international duty this season.
But after criticising the way Costa has been used by his country, Mourinho is convinced the player has benefited from being left out of Spain squad for the recent round of international matches.

Despite a lingering hamstring complaint, Costa has struck ten goals in his first nine Premier League games since a 32 million ($53.1 million) move from Atletico Madrid.
And with Chelsea facing a grueling run of 12 matches in 41 days between Saturday's clash with West Bromwich Albion and the January 1 visit to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho is satisfied Costa is fully prepared for the demanding programme.
"He (Costa) had a little holiday, with a Chelsea physio, for two weeks so even then he was working many hours per day with our physio," Mourinho told a news conference at the club's Cobham training centre, south-west of London, on Friday.
"After that he came back, he keeps going in the right direction. We feel he's free of his old injury," the Portuguese manager added.
"But now we are going to have a period that is new for him," said Mourinho of the congested run of holiday period fixtures which, while a traditional feature of British football, has no equivalent elsewhere in Europe.
"I believe the Christmas period for players doing it for the first time in their careers is more difficult," Mourinho said.
"The English players, or those who have been here for many years, are more physically and mentally adapted and prepared to cope with the special incredible marathon of football we face.
"We spoke yesterday (Thursday) about it. But we go match after match. Diego has four yellow cards. Am I going to protect him? No way. He plays. When he's fit, he plays."
No complacency
Chelsea, unbeaten in all competitions this season, face West Brom with Mourinho's men top of the Premier League and four points clear of surprise package Southampton.
However, Mourinho said: "There is no complacency, that's for sure. If we lose matches, and I believe we will, it won't be because of complacency. It will be because football is football.
"In our game against Maribor in the Champions League, we lost two points but it wasn't down to complacency. It was because of football.
"Their goalkeeper was the man-of-the-match and we missed so many chances, but my team played tremendously well in the second half.
"But we still lost two points. You lose points because it's football, because the opponents are better than you, but not because of complacency."
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has been linked with a January move away from the club after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois.
Paris Saint Germain, Arsenal and AC Milan have all been linked with the Czech international but Mourinho denied there had been an approach for the player.
"I promise you, I tell you the truth. On my desk, normally information arrives from the board. But I have zero. Zero proposals.
"At this moment, Petr Cech is our goalkeeper and has a contract for two more years. He's a fantastic professional and puts the team's interests first."Not once has Petr Cech knocked on my door to inform me of his desire to accept some proposal. This is my truth, nothing more I can say.
